HFC Firefighters Prayer Print this page
The story behind the Howells Fire Company firefighter’s prayer.
In preparing for the April 17, 2006 memorial service for Dave Smith, I considered the most appropriate way to phrase a prayer that would reflect the service and the conditions under which he gave his life.
Past Chief, Past President, and Commissioner David E. Smith, an active member of the Howells Fire District Fire Police was responding to an alarm when he died.
For Dave, fire fighting did involve a willingness to take risks to rescue others from death by fire, but there was more, much more for him involved in being a fire fighter.
He shared the current fire service emphasis upon developing the skills of individuals and team effort to reduce the risks of dying and to increase the odds that everyone will survive the incident when an alarm is sounded.
Those like Dave who guard remote highway intersections directing traffic around a fire scene and those who perform interior fire fighting and rescue are all members of the same team.
Hours of training, practice, and experience on calls lead to better control and more effective team work than would be possible otherwise.
The prayer I wrote sets a faith context for the unity of those who are now fire service participants.

Howells Fire Company
Firefighter’s Prayer
God, we pray that you will continue to inspire us to acts of kindness and service to others.
As a company, when we serve to save others, we are mindful that we do not serve alone.
We stand as a team, inspired by your caring spirit.
Our well-practiced team develops through hours of training, drills, and experience at incidents of response.
Each member of our team becomes a trusted friend and a supporter of our service.
When one is honored, all share the joy, when one falls, all share the loss.
Even so, we know that we do not serve alone, for you stand with us, stretching out a helping hand through us.
Amen
